The 6th grade teams have really picked up on their empty bowls project, and the quality of the work has been improving all week. The bowls created in class over the next few weeks will be donated to the Empty Bowls Family Dinner that we will be holding at and with Attea’s visual art classes on May 20th. Each student has been working collaboratively with a team of students to create the bowls, so there is no “ownership” of one individual bowl, but a group endeavor to create artwork that will be used for our community.  During class a student team might have started a new bowl, some have been working on additive or subtractive sculpture methods in decorating the bowl forms utilizing texture, and soon the student teams will be adding color to our pieces with food safe glazes. To record the work from class, each student has been creating an Online Journal in their “Art on Line” accounts. Ask your child to sign in above to see theirs. Click on the images here to go to a gallery of photos from class, and check back to see more images of the students at work.

The date for our Empty Bowls Event, May 20th,  is also when we will be having our 7th Annual Middle School Fine Arts Fair at the Park Center. Any parents who would like to volunteer for helping with empty bowls by donating a homemade soup or bread can contact Susie Feldstein. Parents who are not as culinarily inclined but would like to help with hanging the art show at the park center should contact the PTA art Fair Chairperson, Markie Condon.

I know Ms. Wu from Attea, Mrs. Christopolous from both Springman and Attea, and I (Mr. K) really appreciate all the help in putting on these events!

Hey Guys,

Some of you might already know about the FreeRice website. It’s a non-profit website run by the United Nations World Food Program. Their partner is the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University.

FreeRice has two goals:

  1. Provide education to everyone for free.
  2. Help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free.

You might not have known that they have a great art section. You look at famous works of art, and guess the artist names. It’s a fun way to learn about what an artist style looks like, and somewhere in the world, a person will be eating rice that you helped provide!

Give it a try by clicking on the image above!

Hey Guys,

I’ve had a lot of questions regarding online #1 emailed to me and sent to me by clicking on my name in the “Art on Line” site. Because we do not link to an actual email there, I have not been able to respond to your questions individually when you do that, so don’t think I am ignoring you or your question! This is one of the reasons we have “The 6th Grade Visual Art Forums” set up. Not only can you ask me a question but any student can help you out if they know the answer and happen to be online. Right now there are two forums set up, and around 20 posts in just 2 days! To get to the forums, log into your account and look just under the “Welcome to Genesis & Discovery ” image. The forums are right below the image. Use the questions about online #1 for any questions about the assignment, or go to the general questions if you have one about the site. Don’t forget to read the posts on the forums, a lot of times you can find the answer to a question you have has already been answered! If you question is more personal, feel free to use the link  “Contact Mr. Kolber” in the upper right corner on this page to send me an email from your own email account.

The Discovery and Genesis teams start their visual arts rotation on March 1st! The first few days we will be looking at this site, the resources available here, how students log into their individual “Art on Line” accounts, and taking a pre-test of their art knowledge and skills. (Don’t worry it’s a base line and will not count for this trimester’s grade!) We will also begin our first online assignment looking at line in an image.

The Pegasus team finished up their last week in the art room taking the visual art final exam and working on the “Empty Bowls” program. The team finished creating a remarkable 75 bowls in 4 days! These bowls will be fired over the next few days, and Pegasus team members that are interested in glazing the bowls are welcome to come in the mornings before school starting March 8th. It would be great to get the bowls you made glazed by you, so try to stop in if you can! Click on the photo of the finished bowls on the drying rack to go to a gallery of the work in progress.

The Pegasus team has been finishing up on their last major project of the year, a perspective drawing created using oil pastels. Each student utilized one, two, or three point perspective to create their drawings. Images were brought into class to use as a starting point, but each student was encouraged to experiment with the placement of the vanishing points, creating new perspectives. After the preliminary drawing was completed we looked at the work of the Post-Impressionist artist Vincent VanGogh and Paul Gaugaun for inspirations in choosing colors and creating textures. Student work will be on display throughout Springman over the next few days, and can bee seen in a digital gallery by clicking on any of the outstanding examples here!

Students!

Be sure to read the post below, there are tips on what to study for the final exam!
