Empty Bowls

This year Springman and Attea will be participating in an “Empty Bowls” event to be held on May 20th at the Attea Cafeteria. We chose the Attea Cafeteria for both it’s size and the proximity to the Park Center, because the Middle School Art Fair will be on display during the event. We hope you will come join us as for a simple meal at Attea then come see the outstanding work produced during the year by both Springman and Attea’s art classes and clubs.

Here’s a  little background on the Empty Bowls project. Art teacher John Hartom initiated the project during in 1990-91 when he joined a drive to raise charitable funds in his Michigan community. Hartom’s idea was to organize a charitable event to give artists and art students a way to make a personal difference. Hartom’s students made ceramic bowls in their high school art classes. The finished products were then used as individual serving pieces for a fund-raising meal of soup and bread. Contributing guests kept the empty bowl. During the next year, Hartom and other participants developed this concept into “Empty Bowls.”

Ms. Wu, Attea’s art teacher, Mrs. Christopoulos, 6th grade at both Attea and Springman,  and Mr. Kolber at Springman will be working with all middle school students in class and in X-blocks to create bowls for the event. We are on our way to creating a goal of over 800 bowls for the for the big night. Students are working cooperatively in the creation of the bowls, so each is a reflection of the many hands it takes to be a successful part of this event. The Art teachers and students are joined in this event with the Springman/Attea PTA. From planning, to lining up sponsors and volunteers, even preparing the soup for the simple meal we will be sharing, the PTA Parents have been both tireless & invaluable. THANKS for all your effort! Your teachers will be joining in as well, creating unique team bowls to be raffled off at the event, and helping out in serving the simple meal.

Proceeds from your participation will benefit our local food bank, the Northfield Food Pantry. Everyone involved hopes we can count on your participation in this district wide middle school event. Hand made student bowls will be given out for a $10.00 donation. Family donations of $20.00 will receive 2 handmade bowls and as many reusable plastic bowls as necessary for you family. We ask that you join us in our efforts to support the food bank, and stay to visit the art show at the Park Center.  Tickets for Empty Bowls will be sold in advance at both Springman and Attea.

More information will be upcoming, look to you child’s newsletters and to both Springman and Attea’s websites for updates!
