The Empty Bowls event that we will be having with at Attea is fast approaching, and we need to get a count of how many of you are planning to attend! Please be sure to bring in your Empty Bowls Reply Form that was part of the tri-fold invitation sent home last week. I hope that everyone can attend, you have put in so much work and effort into the project, it would be a shame to not come to the final event and take home a bowl that you worked on! Even if you can not attend the event, you can reserve a bowl and be part of the donation process. If you need a new copy of the reply form that was sent home, click on the image here!
The District 34 Visual Art Fair’s opening night was a great time this past Wednesday! With over 80 works of art on display from the Springman 7th grades, we were well represented. The show will be on display until April 22nd at the Glen Town Center, 2651 Navy Boulevard, in the Glen. I hope you get a chance to go down and see the work! Some of you might already know about the FreeRice website. It’s a non-profit website run by the United Nations World Food Program. Their partner is the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University.
FreeRice has two goals:
Provide education to everyone for free.
Help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free.
You might not have known that they have a great art section. You look at famous works of art, and guess the artist names. It’s a fun way to learn about what an artist style looks like, and somewhere in the world, a person will be eating rice that you helped provide!

This evening there was an awards presentation for the 6 Springman students who’s artwork was selected for the Studio 3 show at Oakton Community College. The student work for this show is selected by showing a visual understanding of the media and subject matter and excellence in craftsmanship. Work from 19 different north suburban schools, with over 100 students being honored, was on display and was quite the sight! It was interesting to see the different media and materials used by the other schools in the creation of their artwork. There was even a giant self portrait made entirely with ink fingerprints! Refreshments and viewing the artwork was followed by an award ceremony were the students received a medal and an award for their work. The Fine arts teachers decided to promote the upcoming musical “Charleston!” with their Halloween costumes, check out the roaring 20’s gangsters! To see more of the Springman Halloween, click on the “Mob” here!
Hey Guys, While surfing the web looking for visual representations of movement and rhythm I came across this video by Michael Moschen, a master juggler. Seeing his variations of forms and shapes in motion and rhythm was really interesting and I thought I would share it here with you. This should especially interest all you kinesthetic learners out there!
Hey guys,
I know you are keeping up with your summer reading for Language Arts, here’s something to keep your art skills honed. Check out “Red Studio“, an interactive site from the Museum of Modern Art. Red Studio was developed by the museum in collaboration with high school students. It explores issues and questions raised by teens about modern art, today’s working artists, and what goes on behind the scenes at a museum. There are also some cool interactive activites for you to try!
On Monday, May 11th I had the opportunity to visit the new modern wing of the Chicago Art Institute for a pre-opening presentation for Chicago area art teachers. The wing houses the extensive modern art collection of the Art Institute, as well as new classrooms and facilities for the public to utilize. I was also re-exposed to the outstanding Art Institute Website and all it has to offer to Internet visitors as well. I highly recommend that you take advantage of the upcoming free week, from May 16 to May 22, to celebrate the opening of the new modern wing. Students from my 6th grade classes who attend can choose one work from the museum to write a formal critique on the element of art space, and an informal critique as to why you picked the artwork you are writing about, for up to 10 enrichment points. I’d look in the second floor galleries, there is one featuring some fantastic architectural drawings showing foreshortening. Download and print the critique sheet by clicking here!
A grand opening reception was held last night at the glen for the students who’s work was on display. Many thanks to all who’s donations made it possible! Especially the Glen Town Center, Starbuck’s Coffee, Cosco, the district 34 administration and district 34 visual art teachers. The show will be up at the Glen Town Center, 2651 Navy Boulevard until April 4th. Genesis and Discovery students who would like to work an enrichment opportunity to show mastery of our vocabulary should click on the resources above and download “Art Show Enrichment” and take it to the show to complete! See Mr. K with any questions!
