The 6th grade classes started their art experience looking at the element of art line. We discussed the three different types of line, 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional, and implied. We then started a series of contour drawings. We started with blind contour, really focusing on observation of the subject matter, and recording our observations without looking at the paper, and then moved on to do full contour drawing, where we also observe the drawing, and make corrections. Here’s the Site we looked at in class this week. The site was created by Graphic Designer Claudia Cortes for a Master of Fine Arts Thesis at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Kudos to her for an outstanding interactive color experience! You will need to have “Adobe Flash” on your computer for the site to work. There is a lot of good info about the moods that color can create in the videos and links at Ms. Cortes’ site that relate to the portrait project we are working on, so click on the image here to get to her site!

Both 6th grade teams are continuing to work on the mural that was started last year. This year, students designed ideas that focused on outdoor sports for our part of the mural. Mrs. Newman and Mr Kolber took the designs that the students came up with and have enlarged the composition to 8′ by 5′ using ideas that the students came up with. The classes will be using the cartoon method of creating the pieces, by creating templates from the drawing then creating them in the clay. This project will be our last for the year, and will be installed at the start of next year by the art club.

The Genesis and Discovery teams have done an outstanding job on their Value/Pattern Portraits. The students created backgrounds using a monochromatic color scheme that was picked to enhance the feeling or emotion that they chose to work with in the self portrait. Enjoy the slide show of the student work below, or click here for a link to the gallery to find an individual!

The genesis and discovery teams have been working hard on their value portraits this past two weeks. Most classes have finished the drawings of the faces, and have started to look at the second half of our project, involving color values, the emotions

that color can effect, and the principle of art Pattern.  Click on the images here to go to a gallery of the work in progress on the value drawings as well as some examples of the finished black and white portraits. Check back to see examples of the finished works including the backgrounds!

The Discovery and Genesis teams have been working hard looking at two new elements of art this past week, value and shape. We started by looking at the element value in a Power-point discussing how value can be used to create depth in a 2D drawing as you can see in the ball drawing here. We looked at how light values pop out from the paper, and how dark values recede. We also discussed how to create a value scale, a tool we will be using in our next project. To see the Power-point from class, check out the resources page above!
